The prevalence of religious imagery is only expected in a country strongly influenced by the Catholic Church. National Artist Ang Kiukok, one of the vanguards of Modern Philippine art who is mostly known for his angst-and-agony-ridden depictions of figures and Cubist works, has produced paintings of the Passion of Christ, among other works with religious themes. This is a significant part of his creative development as a master Filipino modern artist with a distinct personal aesthetic—a combination of Cubist, Surrealist, and Expressionist sensibilities.<br /><br /> This painting is one of his chronicles of faith through the depiction of a religious image. Expressive in Ang’s signature geometric shapes and color palette, the church’s visual features are synthesized into a unified interpretation. The bare details bring out the most elemental, and his Cubist techniques applied in this work break away from the traditional representations of the church. It is a refreshing rendition of a subject matter taken upon by various notable Filipino artists who utilized both traditional and modern approaches through the years. Here, one also sees the influence of the Philippine Art Gallery Neo-Realists and National Artist Vicente Manansala, his mentor, on Ang. <br /><br />When it comes to Ang Kiukok’s works, even the most familiar themes become unique to the eye. Chosen colors and rendered shapes complement each other and compositions are charming and intriguing.
