Inspired by his formal training as an architect, Chabet sought to revitalize the existing canon of Filipino art, which at that time was still heavily inspired by the formalist inclinations set about by the Filipino Modernists. Hence, his style possessed a conceptual or out-of-the-box aesthetic that did not only challenge the artistic trends of the era, but the very meaning and notion of art itself. Chabet often drew upon his immediate surroundings for both inspiration and material, resulting in unorthodox but uniquely inspired creations.<br /><br /> This particular piece exemplifies Chabet’s aesthetic and  academic rigor by challenging the traditional means of creation and by going against the foundational framework of modernity.  The seemingly random brushstrokes and gestures do not imply a  sense of ignorance towards his craft, but showcase his stalwart  dedication to uniqueness and originality. <br /><br /> His position as studio arts professor at the College of Fine  Arts at the University of the Philippines and his stint as artistic  director of the Cultural Center of the Philippines from 1960  to 1971 enabled him to pursue this mission.
