Laid down on an assortment of blankets where the mother and child are situated in the rich harvest of the season, mainly tropical fruits and flowers. Wearing a floral and blouse, and red headdress, the mother carries her son who shares her physical features. But just as the Mother and Child found its true historic form during the stylized Romanesque period in Europe, Belleza’s version still possesses “Romanesque” features in a contemporary indigenous way, through her stocky and heavy build.

Belleza’s stylized figuration of the Filipina has come to be known as a potent display of fortitude—a powerful depiction of the Filipina woman; forged of strength and will. In this work by the renowned modern, we are treated to an allegorical composition—the woman at the center of the household caring for her child. The naïve simplicity of form is more than reciprocated with her rich folk colors and a variety of festive decorative detail. Her paintings then turned into bright colors and detailed work on folk genres, including women vendors, potters, and workers. Figurative works placed emphasis on her subject’s physical appearance. Serving as their background is a scene familiar to most Filipinos: a colorfullyclad Santo Niño, a lively marketplace, and sunshades flapping in the wind. An exuberant, joyous painting, this piece showcases Norma Belleza at her best.

Born in 1939 to a family of marquee and billboard painters, Norma Belleza was introduced to art at a fairly early age. She earned her Bachelor’s degree from the University of Santo Tomas’ College of Fine Arts. She won the second prize at the Shell National Students Art Competition in 1961 and then put up her first solo exhibition at the Philippine Art Gallery in 1963. She was a recipient of the Araw ng Maynila Award for Painting and then represented the Philippines in the First ASEAN Symposium of Aesthetics Workshop and Exhibition. She is included in the book Self-Portraits: Twelve Filipino Artists Speak by Thelma Kintanar and Sylvia Mendez Ventura which was published by the Ateneo Press.","lot_group":"PAINTING","lot_details_html":null,"alias":null,"hp":208000,"bp":0.168,"isWithdrawn":0,"accounting_hp":208000,"userBid":5926,"isPaid":0,"userId":22,"lot_status":"SOLD","isDone":1,"bid_history_id":null,"reserve_price":null,"hammer_price":242944,"fav":0},"image":[{"id":57601,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/29/50/lot/290.jpg","isFeatured":1}]},"increment":[220000,240000,260000,280000,300000,320000,340000,360000,380000,400000,450000,500000,550000,600000,650000,700000,750000,800000,900000,1000000,1100000,1200000,1300000,1400000,1500000,1600000,1700000,1800000,1900000,2000000,2200000,2400000,2600000,2800000,3000000,3200000,3400000,3600000,3800000,4000000,4200000,4400000,4600000,4800000,5000000,5500000,6000000,6500000,7000000,7500000,8000000,8500000,9000000,9500000,10000000,11000000,12000000,13000000,14000000,15000000,16000000,17000000,18000000,19000000,20000000],"prev":289,"next":291,"count_bid":0,"bid_history":[],"tokenExpired":1}
