In\nhis artworks, he combines autobiographical material with\ncanonical works, dimming the distinctions between personal\nand cultural histories.

\n\nFor Calubayan, thoughts should amount to actions which\nconstitute objects, and objects should be organized into new\nhistories, thus eventually offering new opportunities to reestablish\na Filipino identity.

\n\nFollowing the trajectory of the Filipino masters during the Gilded\nAge, Buen Calubayan began one of his most ambitious projects\nin 2016, the exhibition Hidalgo: Towards a History from Within.\nThe main objective of the project was “to locate and problematize\nFelix Resurreccion Hidalgo’s positioning during the 19th century\ntowards the turn of the century wherein many changes occurred.”

\n\nIn Part 3 of this watershed exhibit, Calubayan sought to further\nexplore the Academism of Resurreccion Hidalgo by recreating anatomical sketches of the kind that would have been done\nby the master in preparation for his works.

\n\nThe catalog notes state, “Furthermore, the rigid\nAcademic training doesn’t allow Felix to make mistakes.\nThis is evident in his numerous sketches done before\ndoing the actual final work where supposedly all\nmistakes and trials have been eliminated—making the\nfinal work almost mechanically rendered, lacking its core\norganic emblem.” To resolve this, the author states,\nhe also “strategically disclosed, whenever available, all\nnotations and reference photos of my paintings to allow\ncomparison and identify mistakes—finally rendering\nfailures as the finishing touches needed to make the\nworks unfinished again, bringing back its true potential\nfor further growth and improvement.”

\n\nThus these sketches form an integral part of the narrative of\nthe pivotal Hidalgo exhibit.","lot_group":"PAINTING","lot_details_html":"
Buen Calubayan (b. 1973)
Anatomy
(Series of 12 drawings)
a) Muscular System I
b) Muscular System II
c) Skeletal System Frontal View
d) Skeletal System Rear View
e) Cranium Bone
f) Thoracic Cage I
g) Eye drawings
h) Thoracic Cage II
i) Skeleton Upper Extremity
j) Skeleton Lower Extremity
k) Facial Features
l) Infant Sketches
signed and dated 1997 (lower left)
graphite on paper
18” x 12” (46 cm x 30 cm)
8.5” x 11” (22 cm x 28 cm)
8.5” x 13” (22 cm x 33 cm )
","alias":null,"hp":360000,"bp":0.168,"isWithdrawn":0,"accounting_hp":360000,"userBid":5930,"isPaid":0,"userId":22,"lot_status":"SOLD","isDone":1,"bid_history_id":null,"reserve_price":null,"hammer_price":420480,"fav":0},"image":[{"id":23693,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/30/51/lot/11.jpg","isFeatured":1}]},"increment":[220000,240000,260000,280000,300000,320000,340000,360000,380000,400000,450000,500000,550000,600000,650000,700000,750000,800000,900000,1000000,1100000,1200000,1300000,1400000,1500000,1600000,1700000,1800000,1900000,2000000,2200000,2400000,2600000,2800000,3000000,3200000,3400000,3600000,3800000,4000000,4200000,4400000,4600000,4800000,5000000,5500000,6000000,6500000,7000000,7500000,8000000,8500000,9000000,9500000,10000000,11000000,12000000,13000000,14000000,15000000,16000000,17000000,18000000,19000000,20000000],"prev":10,"next":12,"count_bid":0,"bid_history":[],"tokenExpired":1}
