On the island\nof Mindanao near the Laguna de Mindanao, there is a Spanish\ninscription “Aqui estuvo S. Franc[isco] Xavier”—“St. Francis\nXavier was here!” This bolstered the 18th century fond belief\nthat the “Apostle of the Indies” set foot in Mindanao. The\nupper right and lower left corners are enhanced with decorative\ncartouches.<br /><br />\nMurillo Velarde asked the printer Nicolás de la Cruz de Bagay\nto engrave both the 1734 and 1760 maps. Murillo Velarde\nexpressed his admiration for the talent of the Indios (Filipinos)\nin the arts and in the passage found in the lower left corner of\nthe map:<br />\n“…The Indios [Filipinos] are well-built, have fine features and\nare dusky in complexion.
