He sought out a bare essential purity of his subjects conveyed  in a straightforward way, emphasizing major forms and upright lines to clearly define  shape and contour. These works represent the less known side of Tabuena who is often  associated with tonal paintings of nipa huts and peasants, fragile figures in a misty setting.  Painted in 1955, it represents one of his other earlier styles in complete contrast to the  first; it is dark and heavy relieved by the narrow outlines, while his more popular style is  ethereal.
