Spearheaded by its founding director Arturo Luz,\nthe MOPA’s “Five Directions” was a groundbreaking\nshow as it “put together in one exhibition certain\nstylistic tendencies moving along similar lines,” writes\nthe exhibit’s curator and eminent art critic Rod. ParasPerez. The show assembled the best and brightest in\nthe Philippine art scene of the post-war period: the NeoRealists, the Non-Objectives, the “Lakeshore” Artists,\nThe Macro-Visionaries/Magic Realists/Hyper Realists,\nand the CCP Group.

Returning to Legaspi’s Dancing Nude, the work is\nemblematic of the artist’s creative praxis during the\n1970s, in which “he referred to objective reality as only\nas an undertone to his powerful abstract images,” as\ncritic Alicia Coseteng writes in the book Art Philippines.\nBy the 1960s, Legaspi had started to veer towards\nabstraction, and the 1970s would mark the consummate\nrealization of this style. Legaspi depicts two nude\nfigures, a man and a woman. He weaves Expressionism\nwith his trademark Cubist language, underscoring the intensity of colors and irregularity yet solidity of forms.

The Neo-Realist spirit of painting renewed perspectives\non the often harsh reality is ever-present in this\nwork. Both figures seemingly merge with the space\naround them, dancing their way to form one coherent\nwhole. Legaspi’s radical fragmentation results in the\noverlapping of different elements in the composition,\ngiving birth to an enigmatic harmonious oneness.\nAlthough depicting nudes, eroticism is not expressed\nbut what is likely the struggling Filipino collective spirit in\nthe immediate period of post-war rehabilitation, all the\nmore so in the period of dictatorial rule in the 1970s—\nwhen this work was painted—in which people from all\nwalks of life confronted in solidarity the contradicting\nelements of resilience, hope, and anguish brought by\nthe darkness of the socio-economic and socio-political\nlandscape of the time.

Coseteng writes in the same monograph: “Legaspi’s\nleitmotif is a concern for the disinherited, struggling to\nexist in a harsh world. The social content of his mural\nreflects the influence of the protest movements of the\npostwar period.” (Adrian Maranan)\n ","lot_group":"PAINTING","lot_details_html":null,"alias":null,"hp":2200000,"bp":0.2016,"isWithdrawn":0,"accounting_hp":2200000,"userBid":5926,"isPaid":0,"userId":22,"lot_status":"SOLD","isDone":1,"bid_history_id":null,"reserve_price":null,"hammer_price":2643520,"fav":0},"image":[{"id":2040,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/4/5/lot/103.jpg","isFeatured":1}]},"increment":[2200000,2400000,2600000,2800000,3000000,3200000,3400000,3600000,3800000,4000000,4200000,4400000,4600000,4800000,5000000,5500000,6000000,6500000,7000000,7500000,8000000,8500000,9000000,9500000,10000000,11000000,12000000,13000000,14000000,15000000,16000000,17000000,18000000,19000000,20000000],"prev":102,"next":104,"count_bid":0,"bid_history":[],"tokenExpired":1}
