With a \nfondness for the subject of the Filipino folk, his artistic \npractice seems a whimsically tactile takeoff from the \nrural folk of his father Angel Cacnio’s paintings. While \nhis father drew inspiration from the collectivity of rural \nliving by portraying fisherfolk, farmers, cockfights, and \ntown festivities in his paintings that combine a classic \nAmorsolo-esque naturalism with an illustrative flair, \nMichael Cacnio singles out peripheral subjects that \noften camouflage themselves into the background of \neveryday life. Vendors, children at play, imagery of folk \nlivelihood and the domestic are singled out to capture \na more personal experience of the everyday in his work. \nThese quotidian subjects, all too easily forgotten in \npassing, are far from monumental. And yet, in the works \nof Michael Cacnio, they become solidified in brass as little \nmonuments evoking the nostalgia of Filipino childhood.<br /><br />\nPerhaps that is exactly the charm of Cacnio’s body of \nwork—the childlike eyes through which he sees the \neveryday. There is always a playful exaggeration to his \ntreatment of subjects that is ever present in the piece at \nhand. <br /><br />\nHere, however, the artist selects a more daring choice \nof subject—one that brings out a stronger social realist \nvoice than is typically seen in a Cacnio sculpture. In place \nof the common folk, we see in this piece a stout man \ndonning a large top hat. Seated on a comically tall chair, \nthe man carries three gold bars and holds out a palm to \nthe heavens, as if waiting for a blessing to come from \nabove. Cacnio’s most favored subject, however, is not \ntotally absent here. The caricature Cacnio makes of the \ngreedy man recalls the whimsical humor of the folk that \nis epitomized by characters of the fool archetype (or the \npusong) such as Juan Tamad and Juan Pusong in Filipino \nfolktales. Similar to the stories of Juan Pusong where \nthe titular character Juan mockingly outwits authority, \nI Want More possesses a subversive humor that can \nonly come from the playful mind of the commoner with \na humble stature, thus rendering the folk ever present \ndespite their sculptural absence.
