The initial installment, aptly named Larawan, \ntook shape during the artist's residency in London. \nThis iteration intricately weaves together portraits of \nBenCab's fellow artists who had either permanently \nrelocated abroad or were transient visitors. A captivating \nmosaic of individuals emerges, capturing the essence of \nthose who had departed the Philippine shores.

\nLarawan II emerged as a response to BenCab's \nencounter with the works of R.B. Kitaj. This encounter \ninfused his creative spirit with Kitaj's memetic visual \nlanguage, sparking a transformation in his own artistic \nexpression. Larawan II embraces a more streamlined \napproach, manifesting as a composition both simplified \nand elevated in its finesse. Within its minimalistic \ngraphical framework, BenCab's affinity for graphical \ndevices takes center stage, illustrating his fascination \nwith subtlety and reductionism.

\nThe final phase, Larawan III, represents a revolutionary \nperiod in BenCab's artistic evolution. During this \njuncture, traditional and pre-colonial Filipino concepts \nare intertwined with the social, political, and economic \ndimensions of their time. Works imbued with these \nconcepts carry the weight of these multifaceted \nimplications. However, Larawan III emerges as a \ndeclaration of emancipation. Here, BenCab extricates \nhimself from the delicate act of balancing these intricate \nthreads, resolutely establishing the artist's primary role \nas an arbiter of aesthetic confrontation.

\nDespite the distinctions between the three different \nconceptions of his Larawan series, one aspect seemingly \npervades the artistic canon of BenCab; the color brown. \nThis prevalent yet mysterious shade has seemingly cast \nits shadow not only on the Larawan series, but most of \nCabrera’s works. From the many iterations of Sabel down \nto his more recent outings, the color brown remains \never present in its many forms.Though not as distinct \nas the duality of black and white, nor as eye catching as \nthe other choices on the color wheel, the appeal of the \ncolor brown is pervasive as it is elusive. It is the color of \nthe earth, of the flora that spring forth, of the age that \ncreeps on every thing whose life is due to return to the \nearth itself. For art critic Cid Reyes: “Brown is the color \nof Bencab’s art.”. It goes beyond mere artistic choice, \nand reflects the reality of our Filipino identity.
