The aim is to develop a heightened state of \nawareness, approaching these experiences with an open \nmind and without expectations.<br /><br />\nLao’s painting can be viewed as what one sees when \ndoing meditative focus. To achieve this, one must direct \ntheir attention to the stone and engage all senses in the \nexperience. A sense of connection or closeness with the \nstone will ensue as one maintains focus. Then, one will be \ntransported into a state of reflection and contemplation. \nAs observed in the canvas, a stone sits alone on the table, \nalthough there seems to be more as the title indicates. \nWell, it can be assumed that Lao was seeing beyond what \nwas visible, inviting the viewer to also look deep into the \npiece.<br /><br />\nTo impart Zen’s essence, teachings, and the experience \nof enlightenment, its depictions in paintings are enriched \nwith metaphorical significance. For this one, stones could \nbe a symbol of stillness, stability, or the natural world. \nSimilar to a stone that is solid and still, Zen beliefs and \npractices value being present and immersed in each \nmoment.
