From his earlier \nand more figurative earlier works to his more \nrecent hyperrealistic outings, Barrioquinto manages to \nsuccessfully mold and utilize the human face as a site \nof expression. But what makes this piece both rare and \nunique is that it is among the few self-portraits produced \nby Barrioquinto. One might think that either the practice \nof self-portraiture is either something similar to other kinds \nof portraiture, or that it is an act of vanity among other \nthings. But one can view the practice as something that \nsprings forth or fosters self-awareness. Throughout the \nprocess, the artist is put into a position of self-reflection as \nthey are caught within the web of producing a work that \nmust choose whether it should represent how they see \nthemselves or how the world sees them. Such is implied \nin this work wherein Barrioquinto creates a work that also \nbrings in his fascination with Japanese and other eastern \naesthetics.<br /><br />\nBarrioquinto notes that “I take some ideas from my past \nshows that I modify to create something new. That’s why \nif you look through my old and new paintings, you’ll find \nsome concepts that I’ve done before.
