To form the blocks into sculptures of \nethereal beauty, the glass is painstakingly hand-cut \nand ground until the figure he envisions is gradually \nrevealed. <br /><br />\nThe lot on hand resembles that of a woman’s body \nbased on the round, pointed breasts and a slim \nwaist that flares into hips. The elegant contours of \nNude must have been a great challenge for Orlina \nto shape and smoothen using his improvised and \nhandmade tools.<br /><br /> \nOrlina has done other sculptures showcasing torsos and \nhips. For instance, there was Torso in 1997 made of Asahi \nglass, and Ecstasy II in 2009 made of amber crystal. What \nmakes Nude different from these pieces is that it features \na graceful neck and shoulders. This piece also seems to \nbe standing straight and her spine unarched, as opposed \nto another Orlina female figure in this auction. <br /><br />\nThe ingenuity of Orlina's portrayal of the female figure \nhas been praised by art critic Eric Torres. He points out \nthat \"The female breast Orlina exhorts is no mere \nobject of voyeuristic prurience. [It is] a hymn to every \nwoman generously endowed by nature. It is also \na salute to the curve and the sphere as with an \neye to perfection of form and finish. Orlina goes \nbeyond the sensuous in the metaphysical.” \nThis description is aptly applicable to the lot \nin hand, Nude.
