We can see a man donned \nin his office attire. He is seated and clearly showing signs \nof emotional distress and agitation; his spirits are low, \nhis mind is wretched, and he is in a very demoralizing \nsituation. In a portrait of the Filipino as an exploited \nworker, Borlongan shows the movers and makers of \nsociety as suffering from socio-economic distress and \nprecariousness brought by unjust and inhumane labor \nconditions: low wages that cannot keep up with the \nrapidly rising cost of living, the absence of a livable \nnational minimum wage, fascist attacks to silence workers \nwho are only forwarding and amplifying their immediate \nand long-term concerns and interests, and the further \nestrangement of the workers not only from their labor but \nalso from others and their own selves—their passions and \ntheir harmonious relationships with others. Ours is a labor \nthat merely and hardly fulfills our basic needs to survive \nyet satiate the lavishness and caprices of the bourgeoisie. \nTherefore, labor is not livable, productive, and fulfilling; it \nis dehumanizing.
