Aside from the human body, nature is \noften used as the standard and measurement \nfor beauty. From metaphors and myths, beauty was \nrarely talked about outside of the context of nature \nitself. Paradises were lands described with “milk and \nhoney”, utopias were no stranger to “lush rolling hills.” \nEven the more complex nuances of beauty such as the \ncase of the phrase wine-dark sea, an Homeric epithet, \nreels in the complexity of our aesthetic relationship with \nnature through only a few simple words. Such is also \nthe case in the visual arts. Where the earliest works \nand pieces often featured landscapes, animals, or other \nnaturally occurring things. That isn’t to say that a strict adherence to the purely natural is the only standard of \nbeauty or of aesthetics. Instead what this shows us is \nthat it is going to be a hard thing to shake off, and that \nsuch an approach should grow with us and not dictate \nour relationship and understanding of art and aesthetics \nin general. <br /><br />\nThus, it is no surprise that in today’s modern age, \namongst a plethora of objects and phenomenon, Filipino \nartist Norberto Carating has chosen the site of Anilao, \na popular diving town in Batangas as the muse for one \nof his iconic abstract series. Our fascination with the \nenvironment may also be rooted in something other than \nappearances. Though the artist is known for his more \nabstract practice, he was also very much interested in \ntransforming landscapes into pieces that utilize a unique \nblend of abstraction and impressionism.<br /><br />\nThe philosopher John Dewey in his seminal work \n‘Art as Experience’ partly operates under a sort of \nrenewed understanding of the natural and the what \nwe experience. For Dewey, the fact that we find beauty \nin the environment is not because it is a stand in for \nthings that are spiritual or divine. Instead, the fact that \nwe can draw upon aesthetic value from something so \ncommonplace showcases us that inspiration truly exists \nall around us. What matters is trying to understand and \nappreciate our relationship with it.
