Manansala, who possessed a mastery of the \ncubist style, had made a profound impact on Kiukok \nas his teacher, after all. Despite this, Kiukok would not \nsimply live under the name of his maestro. In contrast \nto the idyllic folk subjects of Manansala’s transparent \ncubism, Kiukok would dwell on the sacred and profane \nin a style of geometric figuration that evoked a grating \nsense of space.<br /><br />\nThe crucifix is among Kiukok’s most favored subjects \nalongside other religious images such as the Pieta, \nthe suffering Christ, the Last Supper, votive candles, \nand churches. Often, he strips his subjects down into \nbonelike figurations that are both sharp and stark. And \nyet, what the artist paints is far from irreverent. Instead, \nthey simply illustrate a disturbing picture of emaciation \nthat captures viscerally the feeling of excruciating \ndespair.<br /><br />\nRiddled with religious angst, Kiukok’s crucifixes in \nparticular seem to foreground Christ as human—the \nGod made flesh—whose passion is borne from such \nworldly suffering. It is a suffering that emaciates—\nyet supposedly emancipates the believer at the same \ntime. But in the excruciating moment of great pain and \nsuffering, how is one to still believe in the saving act \nof passion and sacrifice? Kiukok’s recurrent fixation on \nthe sacred seems to supply an answer: that there is \nonly suffering because belief remains.
