Rodriguez Sr., also known by his \nnickname Mang Maning, was born in Cebu, \nPhilippines. He grew up in a humble family, \nhis father was a goldsmith and engraver who created \nornaments for churches, designed liturgical vestments, \nand crafted jewelry. The young Manuel would soon leave \nfor Manila to study Fine Arts at the University of the \nPhilippines. When the debate between the conservatives \nand the modernists was at its height, he sided with \nthe modernists. Although he trained in the academic \ntradition, he preferred to deal with abstract human \nforms and experiment with textural values, as observed \nin this early work, Fish Vendors.

\nThe wax piece at hand, dated 1954, was exhibited at the \nArt Association of the Philippines (AAP) Annual, Manila.

\nRodriguez Sr. explored various subjects and themes in \nhis artworks, drawing inspiration from daily life, bucolic \nlandscapes, and Filipino culture. His canvases are \ninhabited by farmers, fishermen, vendors, and other \nindividuals in their natural settings, the kind of setting \nthat showcases the natural beauty of the Philippines. \nSometimes, his works also touched on religious and \nspiritual themes that are deeply ingrained in Filipino \nculture, evoking a sense of unity and community.

\nRodriguez Sr. had a multidisciplinary approach to art, as \nhis artistic endeavor also delved into printmaking. Often \nreferred to as the \"Father of Philippine Printmaking,\" \nhe was instrumental in promoting printmaking as a \nlegitimate and respected art form in the country. In \naddition to that, he was also a teacher and mentor \nto many aspiring artists. He shared his expertise and \nknowledge with younger generations, contributing to \nthe growth and development of Philippine art.

\nThe legacy of Rodriguez Sr. lives on through his \noeuvres, his influence on Philippine printmaking, and his \ncontributions to the broader art community.
