For Zobel, painting and \ndrawing are at once alike and different. A drawing can \nbe large, colored, and finished. A painting may be small, \ncolorless and simple\".<br /><br />\nWhen Spanish and European critics mention specific \nOriental or Filipino aspects within Zobel's art, they are \nreferring to elements associated with the artist's early \nfascination with the Chinese language and brushwork. \nThrough this lens, Zobel upheld the belief in the intrinsic \nbeauty of a painting. The artwork he presents for \ncontemplation emerges from an inner journey. The \nintention is to extract the individual experiences of these \nartists and filter them through his personal sensitivity. \nThrough his work, a significant aspect of his character \ncomes to light — his desire to strike a balance between a \nstrongly rational inclination towards moderation on one \nside and a visually assertive instinct on the other.
