Perhaps, it is a memory from his past or \na reminder of the moment he abandoned the mundane \nconnotations of a suit and tie.<br /><br />\nIn art, “nude” and “naked” are not the same. Although \nboth terms refer to the absence of clothing, they have \na distinction in meaning and depiction: “nude” is \nportrayed in a manner that captures an artful essence, \nwhereas “naked” is simply being vulnerable while \nunclothed. Indeed, it is the latter that is being depicted \nin this aptly titled piece.<br /><br />\nThe contemporary Filipino artist of this oil painting, \nRonald Ventura, is renowned for his oeuvre that tends \nto revolve around the human form and utilizes a broad \nrange of imagery that draws inspiration from historical \nevents, religious themes, mythologies, and science \nfiction.<br /><br />\nHis compositions show a complex layering of images \nand styles. “I will paint and update a painting until I \nam satisfied. It’s like a film director who is shooting a \nscene—at certain points, he will feel like he needs more \nextras or more light,” he said in an interview. “This is \nthe closest analogy to my painting process that I can \nthink of.”<br /><br />\nVentura became a recipient of the Artist of the Year \nprize from Art Manila in 2001, the year this piece is \ndated. Then in 2005, he received the Ateneo Art Award \nfor his Human Study series.
