Fandango of Lights) \nis a traditional Filipino dance from Lubang Island \nin the province of Occidental Mindoro. The dance \ninvolves the deliberate yet graceful balancing of oil lamps \n(tinghóy in the Tagalog lexicon) or small candles in glasses \nwhile elegantly dancing to the tune of a 1930s musical \ncomposition by Antonino Ramirez Buenaventura, a native \nof Baliuag, Bulacan and a National Artist for Music. <br /><br />\nNative stories tell that the \"Pandanggo sa Ilaw\" was said to \nhave originated as a ritual dance for prosperity in fishing, \nthe primary source of livelihood for the people of Lubang \nIsland. At dawn, the fishermen would be journeying to \nthe shore guided by the women holding candles as they \nembark on another journey of toiling in the seas. Some \nstories tell of the dance being performed as a homage to \nthe fluttering of fireflies at night. Whatever its origins, the \n\"Pandanggo sa Ilaw” has become a cultural trademark \nand treasure not only of the two Mindoro provinces—\nOccidental and Oriental—but of the entire nation as well.<br /><br /> \nNapoleon Abueva, the “Father of Modern Philippine \nSculpture” and National Artist for Sculpture, depicts in the \nwork at hand the “Pandanggo sa Ilaw,” employing the \nelegant solidity of cement, thus, evoking the sophistication \nand refinement the dance inherently possesses. One \ncan easily imagine the woman delicately dancing to the \naccompaniment of the exuberant music composed by \nBuenaventura, making this classic piece an intersection \nof two national artists—a dialogue between Abueva and \nBuenaventura.
