But \nart is rarely completely understood only through a mere \nglance.While great art goes beyond the consumption of \na message and opens up the path towards inquiry. Such \nis the effect of the undoubtedly maximalist works of de \nGuia. His collection of mixed media works seemingly \nreflect an aspect of reality; one that showcases its \ninherently convoluted and even chaotic underpinnings. \nMore specifically his works are a reflection of the \nnuances of contemporary Filipino culture. As a society at \nthe center of multiple cultures, histories and influences, \na cohesive singular interpretation of Filipino culture \nand identity would not suffice. Even one that sees the \nconcept as layered would be disingenuous. Instead one \ncan see culture as a web of objects and phenomena. \nHere, contrasts do not clash but intersect, acting as an \necology of things that treat and even accept objects no \nlonger just as extensions of human beings but effective \nentities in-themselves. <br /><br />\nOne could argue that de Guia’s practice utilizes the \ntheories of philosopher Jane Bennett. Bennett argues \nthat non-human entities also have a sense of agency, but \nthis agency does not arise from consciousness but from \ntheir capacity to affect and be affected by other entities. \nThis is what she calls affective ecology,\" which refers \nto the emotional and sensory responses that emerge \nfrom our interactions with the world. For example, \nencountering a vibrant sunset or feeling a sense of awe \nin nature. These affective experiences demonstrate \nthat our emotions are not solely products of human \nconsciousness but also arise from our engagement with \nthe environment.affective ecology,\" which refers to the \nemotional and sensory responses that emerge from our \ninteractions with the world. In the same vein, de Guia’s \ncollage of works and undoubtedly maximalist practice \nshowcases how meaning and interpretation does not \nalso stem from merely human interaction, but also the \ninteraction between the various elements within. The \ninterplay between the objects creates context, tension, \nand inevitably, meaning. Here, the nuances of love, \nits loss, its strain, is expressed through the nuanced \ninterconnectedness of objects. One can even argue \nthat this effect could not have been achieved without \nde Guia’s mixed media and even sculptural approach. \nGiven the fact that knowing that such objects have been \ntaken out of their original showcases a level of agency \nthat, although aided by human hands, continue to chart \na path of their own.
