His stylized \ntableaus, which blend together images of history, \npop culture, and other objects of mythos, often take \non an ironic and satirical tone. The inherent humor of \nhis works stem from the jarring effect that comes from \nhis use of characters or personas that, more often than \nnot, hail from different places, eras, or even worlds. But \nTorres' humor is anything but blunt. Instead, its banter \ncuts deep, revealing a critical eye that directs the viewer \nto the nuances of the situation.<br /><br />\nIn Juanito Torres' work, the characters come to life: \nMarcelo H. del Pilar, known as \"Plaridel,\" stands on the \nleft; Mariano Ponce, also known as \"Tikbalang,\" occupies \na space; Jose Maria Panganiban, referred to as \"Jomapa,\" \nfinds his presence; Graciano Lopez Jaena captures a spot; \nFelix Ressurreccion Hidalgo's essence is painted; Dr. Jose \nRizal, known as \"Laong Laan,\" is depicted; Juan Luna's \nfigure is present; and Antonio Luna, \"Taga-ilog,\" holds a \nplace. Torres intentionally elevates Marcelo H. del Pilar \nand Dr. Jose P. Rizal, positioning them prominently in the \nforeground, given their pivotal roles in The Propaganda \nMovement. The artwork underscores the significance \nof the newspaper ‘La \nSolidaridad.’ Marcelo H. del \nPilar, succeeding Graciano \nLopez Jaena, assumed the \nrole of La Solidaridad's \neditor. Recognized as \nthe father of Philippine \njournalism, he lends his \nname to the College of \nMass Communication \nat the University of the \nPhilippines, also known as \nPlaridel Hall.
