Country Scene — with its calligraphic \nbrushstrokes and atmospheric visual quality — shows \ntraces of those influences. The vegetation, huts, and \nwater are delicately depicted; hence, the viewer gets \nto delight in the dynamism of these gossamer figures \nwith the rural folk: the man on a carabao, the woman \nwashing clothes at the riverbank, and a woman resting \na tray on her head. These elements are compressed, yet \nare not crowded or jumbled. Instead, the barely defined \nfigures evoke calmness and subtle dreamlike quality that \nis a distinguishable characteristic of most of Tabuanea’s \nworks. Country Scene is another piece exemplifying \nTabuena’s ingenuity in rendering local and rural images \nthat reveal the richness and simple beauties of Filipino \nculture.
