They \nneed this to survive, and so do we.”

\n- BREE JONSON

\nThough mortality is often conflated by \nan awareness of it, the concept can \nbe expressed in different ways. From \nthe instinct to survive, reproduce, form \npacks or groups; all of which can be \nderived from natural animal behavior \nwithout the need for projections.

\nBut with mortality also comes a sense \nof vulnerability. Jeremy Bentham notes \nthat “The question is not, Can they \nreason?, nor Can they talk? But, Can \nthey suffer?” It is hard to deny that \nhuman beings are not the only ones \ncapable of suffering. Though others \nmight not exhibit the more existential \naspects of it, should suffering be \njudged in degrees before it is deemed \nwrong? And with this suffering comes \na state of vulnerability. But are the \ntwo essentially the same, or is there a \ndistinction that could give us important \ninsight. Bree Jonson’s Untitled \npiece gives us a rare glimpse into \nanthropomorphism used specifically \nto delve into vulnerability. Arguably, \nvulnerability is distinct from suffering \nin that it is both an acceptance of the \nformer both in its arrival and inevitably. \nHere we see what appears to be a \nmammal seeking refuge within a tree. \nBut it is not fully safe, for half of its \nbody is still exposed to external forces, \nwhether predator or other elements. \nThis is heightened by the fact that \nJonson has also chosen to emphasize \nparticularly vulnerable aspects of \nthe animal’ body. Though danger is \nnowhere near present in the work, \nthere is undoubtedly a looming sense \nof dread within it. This is supplemented \nby the sculptural framing provided by \nthe artist themselves that depicts roots \ncreeping up the painting, alluding to \nthe passage of time. Here, vulnerability \nis seen as a limbo; one in which added \ntime is no more a blessing than the \npresence of a predator.

\nOne can argue that this exercise in \nthe awareness of mortality may also \nrisk the fact that we may return back \nto square one. Even so, an acceptance \nof mortality existing within other \nbeings can ultimately lead to a more \nunderstanding treatment of them. If \nthat is not a step in the right direction, \nperhaps there truly is a need to rethink \nif we should be trudging through any \npath at all.
