A patriot who felt each \ncommission keenly — he would \nsay that Andres Bonifacio and his \nKatipunan warriors would visit him \nin his dreams and guide his chisel \n— his sculptures evoke not only the \nimmortality of these great men but \nstir the emotions they quicken.

\nTolentino’s first foray in hero worship was the popular engraving \nGrupo de Filipinos Ilustres which \nfeatured Jose Rizal front and \ncenter. His heart, however, was \nin sculpture; an inclination that \nstarted as a child when he formed \nclay figures of dogs and horses.

\nThe sculptor would make his way \nto New York where he secured \na serendipitously arranged \nscholarship from the wealthy \nAmerican Bernard Baruch. With \nfunds scraped together in the \nUnited States, he then went on to \nbook passage to Europe. Like Juan \nLuna, he determined to take up \nfurther studies in Rome and this he \ndid for three more years. The Italian \ncommunity in Manila eventually \nrallied around to support him.

\nHe would return to Manila and \nreceive many commissions for \nwork, including from the influential \narchitect Juan Marcos Arellano.

This tribute to Jose Rizal has a \ndouble meaning : on the first level, \nit references the National Hero’s \nown rendering of The Triumph of \nScience over Death. Also known \nas Scientia, this work has become \nsynonymous to the power of reason

\nIn the original, a goddess-like \nfigure holds aloft the light of \nknowledge, illuminating the world \naround her and vanquishing the \ndeath that comes with ignorance. \nShe tramples a skull that sits \nhelpless and hapless on top of a \nthick volume, a book with the title \n‘Scientia.’

\nHowever, because Tolentino has \ndepicted Jose Rizal within the \ncomposition, he also tells us that \nRizal himself is an immortal. In \nthis homage, Rizal is dressed for a \nEuropean winter and also carries a \nsecond cape on his arm, perhaps \nreferring to his academic. He \ncarries the book of learning in one \nhand (which may have the double \nmeaning of the novel Noli that \nsparked a revolution). Rizal appears \nto be in happy contemplation of \nthe future as Lady Knowledge \nlights his way. Through his life \nand works, as well as through his \ndeath and example, Rizal has also \nthus become victorious over death \nand will live forever in the nation’s \nesteem.","lot_group":"SCULPTURE","lot_details_html":null,"alias":null,"hp":650000,"bp":0.2016,"isWithdrawn":0,"accounting_hp":650000,"userBid":6890,"isPaid":0,"userId":22,"lot_status":"SOLD","isDone":1,"bid_history_id":null,"reserve_price":null,"hammer_price":781040,"fav":0},"image":[{"id":1951,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/4/5/lot/19.jpg","isFeatured":1}]},"increment":[450000,500000,550000,600000,650000,700000,750000,800000,900000,1000000,1100000,1200000,1300000,1400000,1500000,1600000,1700000,1800000,1900000,2000000,2200000,2400000,2600000,2800000,3000000,3200000,3400000,3600000,3800000,4000000,4200000,4400000,4600000,4800000,5000000,5500000,6000000,6500000,7000000,7500000,8000000,8500000,9000000,9500000,10000000,11000000,12000000,13000000,14000000,15000000,16000000,17000000,18000000,19000000,20000000],"prev":18,"next":20,"count_bid":0,"bid_history":[],"tokenExpired":1}
