An \nenduring homage. A continuing struggle.

\nGunita formed part of Garibay’s 2010 show at the \nBoston Art Gallery titled “Habang Papalayo,” in which \nhe tackled compelling themes surrounding our collective \nidentity and shared history. Garibay makes us ponder: \nDo we, as a nation, continue to enshrine the value of self_x0002_determination handed to us by our valiant ancestors?

\nThe work at hand brings to mind an iconic photograph \nof Rizal taken during the 1890s. It is ubiquitously found \neverywhere: in classrooms, museums, government \noffices, postcards, stamps, books, and even art. It \nsignifies that Rizal is omnipresent; Rizal lives in the \nstruggling farmers fighting for genuine agrarian \nreform and national industrialization, the exploited \nworkers clamoring for livable wages and humane \nworking conditions, the militant youth fighting for a \nnationalist, scientific, and mass-oriented education, the \nfisherfolks lobbying for a reformed fisheries program, \nthe environmentalists calling for the protection and \nsustainable development of the environment, and \nall Filipinos yearning to be emancipated from the \nexploitation and enslavement brought by the ills of \nsuccessive regimes that continue to be subservient to \nits foreign oppressors.

\nRizal exemplifies, and Garibay professes, our crucial \nrole in arousing, organizing, and mobilizing the greater \nnumber of people to march for genuine sovereignty.\nRizal’s contributions to the awakening of national \nconsciousness in the late 19th-century Philippines that \nwould culminate in the Philippine revolution against \nSpain and the nation’s subsequent independence are \nunequivocal and irrefutable. His enduring legacy is \nimmortalized through his writings, particularly the Noli \nand the El Fili—his art.

\nAs we anticipate the 127th anniversary of Rizal’s \nmartyrdom on December 30, Garibay’s Gunita is a fitting \nreminder not only of Rizal’s legacy; he was a victim of \nstate persecution. Thus, the power toward liberation \nfrom systemic oppression lies in our potent collective \naction. We might ask ourselves: How far have we come, \nand how far are we willing to pursue to safeguard this \nnation?
