In contrast to the collective activity of folk \nsubjects in the works of his parents Norma Belleza and \nAngelito Antonio, Marcel Antonio is driven towards \nintrospections on the psyche, or reflections of an inner \n\"folklore,\" if you will. <br /><br />\nThe figures in Antonio’s works are curious, often bearing \nstone-like faces that wear eerily beguiling expressions, \nas in the pair rendered in this piece. There is an \nenchanting quality to the textured use of dreamy blues \nto paint shadows on the moon-bathed skin of lovers, a \nstark contrast to the stylized distortion of folk figures \nwe see in Norma Belleza and Angelito Antonio’s often \nfestively extroverted works. In Marcel Antonio’s pieces, \nwe instead see an introverted softness, dream-like and \nsensual—and always at the same time surreal as some \nthings appear poetically out of place. If his works strike \nthe viewer with a sense of something being just a little off \nor odd, then perhaps that is simply the work of Antonio’s \nsleight of hand, momentarily jarring the viewer’s reality \nwith what is unreal.<br /><br />\nCarl Jung writes of dreams as impartial and spontaneous \nproducts of the inner psyche, the unconscious slipping \nmomentarily into one's consciousness. If this is so, then \nperhaps the illusory worlds Marcel Antonio conjures are just \na little more than what they appear: the truth of reality itself, \na proof of the living human spirit, just as it is.
