Westendorp often depicted her \nfloral subjects in such a manner because she used to \npaint flowers en plein air. For instance, if not her first, \none of her earliest orchid paintings was done during a \nvisit to Centro de Jardinera Bourguignon, a flower shop \nin Madrid. She asked permission to paint the orchids \ninside the greenhouse and was fortunately permitted.\n“At the beginning, I had to paint on location,”

\nWestendorp said in a conversation with art critic Cid \nReyes. “It’s like getting to know a person. With flowers, \nyou have to know them also.” She believed that in order \nto be acquainted with her floral subjects, she needed to \nbe in their presence.

\nAmong the petaled plants Westendorp has painted, \nthe orchid is a particular favorite, to the point that it \nhas become synonymous with her name. Even so, she \nstill painted other flowers, such as milflores, sunflowers, \nwater lilies, and birds of paradise, to name a few. Her \nearliest floral subjects were roses and carnations, most \nwere gifted to her. Then, her first milflores painting was \ndone in the north of Spain during a summer vacation. \nFor her paintings of hydrangeas, she bought flower pots \nso she could paint in front of them. In her garden, she \nalso planted sunflowers and, again, painted them on her \ncanvas.

\n“I find flowers fascinating. Flowers are for everybody,” \nWestendorp once said.
