His \nworks are not bolstered by his mere eminence and \nstature alone but by their gentle and lovingly pleasant \natmosphere that powerfully transports the viewer into an \nidyllic Philippines, which, by that decade, had undergone \nrapid modernization brought about by constant \ninnovations in aspects of technology, architecture, and \nlifestyle (entertainment, consumption, etc.), as epitomized \nby Calle Escolta, then Manila's financial and commercial \nheart.

\nAmorsolo, who had been residing in Manila, earnestly \nlonged for the idyllic charm of his childhood years in \nDaet, Camarines Norte. Amorsolo's penetrating nostalgia \nfor his youth during his prime decades is especially \nevident in his continuous excursions into the countryside, \npainting en plein air and conversing harmoniously with \nthe soothing spirit of the pastoral. Alfredo Roces writes \nin the book Amorsolo: \"Through the thirties, Amorsolo \nremained highly imaginative and active, periodically \ngoing outdoors…Stimulated by the nostalgia around him \nfor the changing country life, he painted rural life as genre \nrather than aspects of city life.\"

\nAmorsolo's sweet sentimentality is particularly \nencapsulated in his lavandera paintings. In the book \nAmorsolo: Love and Passion, Sylvia Amorsolo-Lazo, the \nmaestro's daughter, says that her father's lavanderas\nwere primarily painted in Laguna, Bulacan, and the more \ntranquil environs of the Pasig River. Peacefully washing \nclothes by the river may have been one of the serene \nsights he had witnessed as a young boy; perhaps, he had \neven experienced it, accompanying his mother, Bonifacia, \nto the streams and relishing that sweet escapade.

\nBeyond nostalgia, Amorsolo's technical flair is central to \nhis lavandera works. As exhibited in this 1937 piece, the \ngraceful swirling of the waters in the forefront is masterfully \nexecuted through delicate impastos. With his slick \nimpressionistic strokes, sunlight is rendered accurately; its \nrays and patches are meticulously depicted throughout \nthe canvas depending on the natural element limiting \nor permitting its penetration. For instance, the waters \nare almost devoid of substantial sunlight (except in the \nforefront) due to the towering bamboo curbing the sun's \nreflection. Meanwhile, the work's foreground possesses a \nluminous touch due to the absence of impediments; the \nsun's rays radiantly beam into the lady's posterior, and \nthe water's smooth flow is glowingly evident.

\nLavanderas is the classic Amorsolo, an embodiment \nof an artist with an enduring ode to the pastoral roots \nof his motherland and a profound grip on his natural \nsurroundings, resulting in an impeccable masterpiece. \n(Adrian Maranan)","lot_group":"PAINTING","lot_details_html":null,"alias":null,"hp":3000000,"bp":0.2016,"isWithdrawn":0,"accounting_hp":3000000,"userBid":5930,"isPaid":0,"userId":22,"lot_status":"SOLD","isDone":1,"bid_history_id":null,"reserve_price":null,"hammer_price":3604800,"fav":0},"image":[{"id":1972,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/4/5/lot/39.jpg","isFeatured":1}]},"increment":[2200000,2400000,2600000,2800000,3000000,3200000,3400000,3600000,3800000,4000000,4200000,4400000,4600000,4800000,5000000,5500000,6000000,6500000,7000000,7500000,8000000,8500000,9000000,9500000,10000000,11000000,12000000,13000000,14000000,15000000,16000000,17000000,18000000,19000000,20000000],"prev":38,"next":40,"count_bid":0,"bid_history":[],"tokenExpired":1}
