Among \nthese were paintings of various Manila bay scenes \ndepicting the busy shipyard and serene atmospheric \nseascapes—all rendered in a distinct gestural hand, \nmarked by a fleeting sense of place and time through \na spontaneous and dynamic brushwork typical of \nAlcuaz’s works.<br /><br />\nAlthough having learned landscape painting under \nthe tutelage of Dr. Toribio Herrera at the UP School \nof Fine Arts in 1949, Alcuaz would go on to develop \na particular sense of place in his landscape paintings \nthat drastically differed from his mentor’s Amorsolo_x0002_esque naturalism: His is an impressionistic gesture that \nviews the landscape with fresh eyes all too accustomed \nto the bustling cosmopolitan views of city life. Vast \nstretches of the urban sprawl would feature more \nthan landscapes in his oeuvre of works, and his knack \nfor rendering a panoramic totality of place—not only \nthrough composition, but also through the contending \nelements of geometric and gestural—would be carried \non to his future works of naturalist scenes.
