Ocampo, and \nRomeo Tabuena, Arturo Luz embodied the transformative \nspirit of neo-realism that emerged in the 1950s. At that \ntime, artists sought to paint a new vision of reality as the \naftermath of the war entailed a rebuilding of Manila’s \ncity space that brought along with it a changing socio_x0002_political landscape. This new vision, however, did not \nmean a total departure from reality, a retreat into fancy—\nnor a mere escape from the horrors of war. Instead, for \nthe neo-realists, the abstractions of their making were \nintimations into nature and the social landscape that \nworlded them as subjects. Because such works were \nnecessarily inflected with an individuality that drew from \nthe subconscious, the neo-realist was thus closer to \nreality than ever.<br /><br />\nIt is a character very much exemplified in the works of \nArturo Luz whom art critic and historian Patrick Flores \ndescribes as having a “feeling for form.” Owing to his \neducational background in design practice, Luz developed \nthis natural instinct for forms and their interrelations in \nspace which allowed him to make masterfully sound \nabstract compositions throughout his artistic career: “I \nsuppose that at the end of such training, you develop this \ninstinct for design. It becomes second nature to you…You \ncan sit down and analyze all inter-relations among the \ndifferent shapes and colors if you wish. You can look at \nany object, any art, or building even, and analyze it purely \nin terms of design. But I don’t do this. Everything to me \nhas become instinctive…”<br /><br /> \nThe oeuvres of Arturo Luz saw experimentations in various \nmediums from painting, sculpture, and printmaking \nto photography and collage. What significantly recurs \nthroughout these various explorations in medium is the \ntechnique of improvisation that espoused the spirit of \nneo-realism and the ethos of design. To improvise means \nto make do in the moment—and cleverly so, at that. It \nis also what belies the heart of Luz’s artistic practice: \nMaking do with the scraps of form that the respective \nmedium allows, alongside the sheer creative impulse of \nthe subconscious in the present. Particularly evident in \nLuz’s collage works, what often materializes on canvas is \nan artfully sound arbitrariness which art critic Raymundo \nAlbano describes as an ‘open-ended system of ordering’ \nthat presents ever-emerging possibilities.
