Mariano A. \nAguilar, Federico Aguilar Alcuaz was a virtuoso of his \nown right. While he had initially followed in his father’s \nfootsteps by studying law at the Ateneo De Manila, \nAlcuaz would eventually diverge from the pursuit of a \nlegal profession and instead carve his own path as an \nartist—a fate perhaps already written in the stars by the \nyoung Federico’s festering inclination towards the visual \narts in his teen years and the aficion for music in the \nAlcuaz household.<br /><br />\nIt was the combination of these two aficion—music and \nthe visual arts—that molded the virtuoso that is Federico \nAguilar. Although renowned for his work in figurative \nand genre paintings, the abstract pieces in his oeuvre \nare just as well something to write home about. While \nthe rhythm in his figurative works are often to be found \nin the gestural character of his brushwork, rhythm in \nAlcuaz’s more abstract pieces lies in the visual patterns \nand meanderings of the piece, thus imbuing it with an \nintrinsic musicality.<br /><br />\nSuch a character is particularly apparent in this 1967 \npiece, just a year before Alcuaz embarked on making \nhis equally musical abstract tapestries. It is also \nundoubtedly the result of a well-traveled artistic career \nof what printmaker and art critic Rod Paras-Perez \ncalls ‘concert-painting,’ alluding to the artist’s travels \nakin to concert performance tours throughout which \nAlcuaz would make small abstract symphonic pieces in \nwatercolor.
