Founded in 1970, Earth Day, \naccording to its official website, “is widely recognized as \nthe largest secular observance in the world, marked by \nmore than a billion people every year as a day of action \nto change human behavior and create global, national \nand local policy changes.” Grounded in its mission “to \ndiversify, educate, and activate” the global environmental \nmovement, Earth Day became an international event \nin 1990, with the first observance in the Philippines \ncommencing on April 22, 1990.

\nThe reds in this piece symbolize the living world as the \nlifeblood of all the creatures that depend on nature’s \nblessings to survive. The blues represent the waters, \nthe vital element that sustains life on Earth. One can \nnotice how Joya applies the slashes and blobs of paint \ninstantaneously. It is as if he represents all of us, rapidly \nracing against the clock, crying out to everyone, and \nexclaiming the gravity of the Earth’s situation and the \nurgency of collective action and putting an end to a \nmercenary and exploitative system to save the Earth, \nbefore we all woefully cling at the end of the rope, \npleading before nature’s unforgiving wrath.

\nJoya’s compelling abstract expressionism stresses our \ncollective responsibility in nurturing, cultivating, and \nconserving the world we live in.

\nA work with a similar theme titled The Ozone (1992) was \nrecently auctioned by León Gallery last June 2023.
