{"status":true,"msg":{"data":{"id":1962,"auction_id":4,"set_id":5,"lot_number":"59","artist":"Leo Valledor (1936 - 1989)","title":"Poleka (Slowly)","starting_price":2000000,"signed_dated":"signed and dated 1965 (verso)","medium":"acrylic on canvas","size":"24\" x 96\" (61 cm x 244 cm)","property":null,"coa":null,"provenance":"Private Collection, New York City","exhibited":null,"literature":null,"write_up":"To understand Leo Valledor’s significance in the \nAmerican art world is to view him in the context of the \nmodernist mid-century, dominated by arguably the \nworld’s most famous painter at the time, Jackson Pollock.<br /><br />\nValledor was at the opposite end of a spectrum dominated \nby Pollock, the man of the New York School whose gestural \nabstract expressionism would knock Picasso and the Paris \nSchool on its ear.<br /><br />\nWhere Pollock was all raw emotion and intense spontaneity, \nValledor was cool, intellectual and deliberate.<br /><br />\nPollock embodied the romance of the rugged American \nWest and its cowboys, would routinely be photographed in \ndenims, a cigarette dangling like James Dean from the side \nof his mouth.<br /><br />\nValledor, while a native of California, had parents who had \nbeen migrants from the Ilocano north; a father who was \na fruit-picker who followed the crops leaving him and his \nmother who ran card games, to fend for themselves. He was \na Filipino-American through and through, although he took \nthe shape of a long-haired mod.<br /><br />\nHe was influenced by the black man’s music, jazz and \nwould name his works after, for example the saxophonist \nJohn Coltrane, or musical terms. For Poleka, the Greek Macedonian word for “slowly”, the pace of the piece is both \njagged and angular. Both ends have the signature sharp \nedges of his shaped canvases. A similar work belongs to the \ncollection of the SFMOMA, fitting for the melting-pot city that \nalso deey influenced Valledor and his works.
