There were various nomenclatures for these \nshamans: babaylan in the Visayas, catalonan for the Tagalogs, \nbaylan in pre-colonial Caraga region, baliyan (female shamans), \nor asog (a male cross-dresser) for the Bicolanos, and bayok \nfor the Zambals, among others. These shamans were held in \nhigh regard and respect due to their supernatural ability to \ncommunicate with and appease the gods and spirits of the land. \nGenerally, the babaylan and other equally related positions were \neither female or male, the latter transcending contemporary \nnotions surrounding sexual orientations and gender identities. \nBut what remains clear is the reverence held for these people, \nwhich translates to the significantly high degree of gender \negalitarianism in Philippine pre-colonial societies.<br /><br />\nIn particular, Justiniani depicts in this piece the regenerative \npowers of the babaylan. Foremost historian on Philippine pre_x0002_colonial societies, William Henry Scott, writes in his landmark \nwork, Barangay: Sixteenth-Century Philippine Culture and \nSociety: “The babaylan’s healing prowess was described in \ndramatic terms: agaw, to carry off by force, was to snatch a pain \nfrom the sufferer; tawag, to call someone out, was to summon \nthe spirit that had kidnapped the soul; and baud, to rescue, was \nto free the invalid from the grip of the afflicting spirit.\"<br /><br />\nThus, the babaylan, the healer of the land and the supreme \nmediator between the sacred and the profane.
