According to MedlinePlus, the \nonline health information service of the US National Library \nof Medicine, “white matter is found in the deeper tissues \nof the brain (subcortical). It contains nerve fibers (axons), \nwhich are extensions of nerve cells (neurons). Many of these \nnerve fibers are surrounded by a type of sheath or covering \ncalled myelin. Myelin gives the white matter its colors. It also \nprotects the nerve fibers from injury. It improves the speed \nand transmission of electrical nerve signals along extensions \nof the nerve cells called axons.” In short, the brain’s white \nmatter are “channels of communication” that ensure the \nquick yet proper transmittal and reception of information \nbetween different areas of the brain.

\nIn this work, Lao depicts the white matter as a waterfall-like\nstructure. The artist derives inspiration from the scientific\ndefinition of white matter and reimagines and reinvents\nthem in his soothing language of Zen. Lao’s unbridled pencil\nstrokes, which evoke the nerve fibers, emanate from the\nacrylic modeling resembling the white matter. Here, the artist\npresents how a dynamic mind powerfully engages in profound meditation. Akin to the white matter and the nerve fibers\nthat enable our neurons to send and receive electrical and\nchemical signals for proper coordination of bodily functions,\nLao presents how meditation inherently runs throughout our\ninner selves, ensuring a keen awareness and perception of\nthe imperfections and contradictions of the mortal world.\nLao shows how our decisions and determinations are borne\nfrom active introspection, the consummate realization of\nthe balance and contrasts of all things, whether material or\nabstract, spiritual or corporal.

Like a waterfall both gently and powerfully cascading down\nfrom a mountain, Lao manifests the unbridled flow of intrinsic\ncalm borne from the meditation of the spirit; a meditation\nthat is quiet in form yet dynamic in practice.

The brain’s white matter and meditation both function in\nthe same way: continuously establishing a sense of harmony\nand clarity. As the legendary founder of Zen Buddhism,\nBodhidharma once said: “Not thinking about anything is\nZen. Once you know this, walking, sitting, or lying down,\neverything you do is Zen.” (Adrian Maranan)","lot_group":"PAINTING","lot_details_html":null,"alias":null,"hp":3400000,"bp":0.2016,"isWithdrawn":0,"accounting_hp":3400000,"userBid":5926,"isPaid":0,"userId":22,"lot_status":"SOLD","isDone":1,"bid_history_id":null,"reserve_price":null,"hammer_price":4085440,"fav":0},"image":[{"id":2000,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/4/5/lot/70.jpg","isFeatured":1}]},"increment":[2200000,2400000,2600000,2800000,3000000,3200000,3400000,3600000,3800000,4000000,4200000,4400000,4600000,4800000,5000000,5500000,6000000,6500000,7000000,7500000,8000000,8500000,9000000,9500000,10000000,11000000,12000000,13000000,14000000,15000000,16000000,17000000,18000000,19000000,20000000],"prev":69,"next":71,"count_bid":0,"bid_history":[],"tokenExpired":1}
