Defeo.","write_up":"Two decades before Summer Retreat was created, \nin the ‘70s, Jose Joya entered his experimental \nphase. He worked in a variety of media and forms \nand explored the limits of acrylic and collage, resulting in \noeuvres that revealed multilayered space penetrated with \nvibrant hues and sometimes neutral tones. The spectrum \nof colors on his canvas is believed to draw inspiration from \ntropical landscapes. For the lot at hand, one can observe \nthe fine artist’s interesting departure from his usual \nbrilliant palette. As expected from Joya, in the absence \nof coloristic concerns, his interest resided in textural \ndetail. His gestural strokes create a motion implied in \nthe amorphous forms, and the paint seems to be applied \nintuitively and spontaneously. His use of complex swathes \nof collage effects and overlapping strokes shows us how \nhe perceived the world with a creative vision that gives \nimportance to controlled freedom.<br /><br />\nThe piece is dated 1992, it is the same year when he \ncreated one of his renowned abstractions titled Spirit \nof Season.
