\nOrpheus was said to be the son of the muse Calliope and \nApollo, the god of poetry, music, dance, the sun, healing, \nand prophecy, among others. He was endowed with the \nsuperhuman gift of music that humans and even gods \nand beasts are enraptured by his mesmerizing melodies \nand spellbinding singing. Apollo, the originator of string \nmusic, gave him his first lyre, the instrument attributed \nto the god.
\nIt was on one occasion of humans and beasts that \nOrpheus was struck by the enchanting beauty of the \nnymph Eurydice, who had also been ravished by the \ndemigod’s voice. It was love at its most instantaneous \nand immaculate, and the two would eventually marry. \nHymen, the god of marriage, blessed their union. \nHowever, he warned them of a looming adversity that \nwould bear an unrelenting agony doomed to transcend \nbeyond the afterlife.
\nHymen’s prophecy would eventually come to fruition, as \nEurydice would succumb to death due to a snakebite. \nThere have been several versions of this story. One \nversion tells of Eurydice wandering the forest with her \nfellow nymphs, while the other narrates of the shepherd god Aristaeus’ insatiable lust over Eurydice and how he \nchased her, eventually leading to the woman’s death \nafter accidentally stepping on a nest of poisonous \nsnakes.
\nEurydice’s death struck Orpheus with an unforgiving grief. \nAccompanied by his lyre, Orpheus’ songs of lamentation \nbecame haunting cries; everything in the world—living or \nnot, mortals and gods—was stirred by his sorrow.
\nOrpheus then decided to go into the underworld. His \ndangerous descent into the realm of the dead was aided \nby his charming music and the guidance and protection \nof Apollo and the other gods. He encountered the souls \nof the dead and managed to enter the gates of the \nunderworld, guarded by the vicious three-headed dog \nCerberus. Orpheus presented himself to Hades and his \nwife, Persephone.
\nAs he poignantly played his lyre and sang out his profound \nsorrow, Orpheus desperately pleaded for his wife to be \nbrought back to the world of the living. Overwhelmed with \ncondolence and compassion, Hades agreed, but under \none condition: Orpheus must walk ahead of Eurydice as \nthey pass through the dreadful domain of the dead and \nmust not in any way attempt to look back at his wife until \nshe had entirely left the underworld.
\nOrpheus then began to embark on what he deemed a \nsmooth-sailing task. Throughout their journey, Orpheus \nwas imbued with a sense of calm; he did not dare to \nlook back at Eurydice. But as soon as the light of hope \nemanating from the land of the living eventually dawned \nupon them, a blazing excitement pervaded Orpheus. He \nturned around to fervently embrace his beloved Eurydice, \nnot realizing she was still in the ghastly abyss of the nether \nregions. In the blink of an eye, Eurydice was condemned \nto eternity in the feral domain of the unforgiving Hades. \n(Adrian Maranan)","lot_group":"PAINTING","lot_details_html":null,"alias":null,"hp":340000,"bp":0.2016,"isWithdrawn":0,"accounting_hp":340000,"userBid":8730,"isPaid":0,"userId":22,"lot_status":"SOLD","isDone":1,"bid_history_id":null,"reserve_price":null,"hammer_price":408544,"fav":0},"image":[{"id":2008,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/4/5/lot/73.jpg","isFeatured":1}]},"increment":[220000,240000,260000,280000,300000,320000,340000,360000,380000,400000,450000,500000,550000,600000,650000,700000,750000,800000,900000,1000000,1100000,1200000,1300000,1400000,1500000,1600000,1700000,1800000,1900000,2000000,2200000,2400000,2600000,2800000,3000000,3200000,3400000,3600000,3800000,4000000,4200000,4400000,4600000,4800000,5000000,5500000,6000000,6500000,7000000,7500000,8000000,8500000,9000000,9500000,10000000,11000000,12000000,13000000,14000000,15000000,16000000,17000000,18000000,19000000,20000000],"prev":72,"next":74,"count_bid":0,"bid_history":[],"tokenExpired":1}
