He was cultured, well-educated, and trained \nin brush painting. At eighteen, he was part of the first \nclass of students who attended the French-sponsored \nEcole Superieure des Beaux-Arts in Hanoi, directed by \nVictor Tardieu—a classmate of Matisse and Moreau—\nbetween 1925 and 1930. Well-traveled, he promoted his \nwork at galleries worldwide. Le Pho settled in France until \nhis death in 2001.

\nLe Pho’s art went through three distinct periods. The \nstrong shifts in subject, medium, and style between them \nare seen to be a testament to his versatility as an artist.

\nHis first period started in Hanoi and stayed until his early \nyears in Paris. Le Pho created landscapes that reminisce \nhis youth in Vietnam, each painting steeped with nostalgia \nand the historical magnificence of the country. His works \nin this period were perhaps a homage to the homeland \nwhich Le Pho left behind.

\nThen, his Romanet Period came to light when he met \na gallery owner who became his major promoter. The \nperiod was named after the French man, and it would \nlast until the 1960s.

\nAfter some time, Le Pho signed a contract with the \nAmerican gallerist Wally Findlay who introduced his works \nto the American market. This would mark the beginning \nof his final artistic period, also known as Findlay Period. \nHis canvases, mostly painted in oil, were inhabited by \nVietnamese women with elongated figures surrounded \nby lush landscapes.

\nLe Pho pursued his Findlay Period with enthusiasm as he \npainted with a bright palette, depicting his usual muses \nand floral still life. As observed in this oil piece, his subjects \nare set in a vibrant background of predominant yellow, \nand the ambiance brings out a level of appeal and delight \nto the viewers.
