He was not only a prodigy but, while still only in \ncollege, also made his way into the most elite group of artists \nin the country, those that called the Philippine Art Gallery their \nhome. He would thus be on first-name basis with its resident \nNeo-Realists; and was the youngest bona fide painter to be part \nof the PAG.

\nIt guaranteed him continuous press coverage and the attention \nslowly but surely built him both credibility and an enthusiastic \nfollowing of collectors.

\nHe would thus begin that inexorable trajectory into the \npantheon of Philippine modern art. It would be, for example, \nFernando Zóbel who would arrange a scholarship for him to \nstudy in Spain in 1954, beginning Joya’s appreciation of a world \nview. He would win first prize in 1958 in the Art Association \nPhilippines’ annual competition, the bellwether of Filipino art.\nIn 1964, Joya would be the first Philippine representative to the \n32nd Venice Biennale.

\nHe also would be the first Filipino recipient of the John D. \nRockefeller III Fund Grant, the precursor to the Asian Cultural \nCouncil Foundation. Joya would steep himself in the American \nart world in 1967 through 1969. In New York, he would even \nmeet Andy Warhol who he wrote to friends was interested in \ncoming to Manila. Joya would also travel to Europe, where in \nSpain he would write enthusiastically about his patron Zóbel’s \nCuenca museum.

\nThe work at hand, Red Talisman, from Joya’s personal \ncollection, is also his most exhibited, besting even the record of \nthe legendary Space Transfiguration. It would be featured in his \nretrospectives and travel the world in prestigious exhibitions.

\nIts meditatively perfect circle would refer to Joya’s voyage into \nthe metaphysical world, referencing the sacred mandala and \nthe symbolisms of the planets. Red Talisman is a rare rendering, \nhowever, since Joya would prefer muted or earth tones for this \nspiritually-grounded series. Here it is composed around strong \nscarlets, suggesting a more intense, if rawer sensibility, with the \nsame exuberance that always defined Joya.","lot_group":"PAINTING","lot_details_html":null,"alias":null,"hp":0,"bp":0.2016,"isWithdrawn":0,"accounting_hp":0,"userBid":5930,"isPaid":0,"userId":22,"lot_status":"UNSOLD","isDone":1,"bid_history_id":null,"reserve_price":0,"hammer_price":0,"fav":0},"image":[{"id":2022,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/4/5/lot/88.jpg","isFeatured":1}]},"increment":[2200000,2400000,2600000,2800000,3000000,3200000,3400000,3600000,3800000,4000000,4200000,4400000,4600000,4800000,5000000,5500000,6000000,6500000,7000000,7500000,8000000,8500000,9000000,9500000,10000000,11000000,12000000,13000000,14000000,15000000,16000000,17000000,18000000,19000000,20000000],"prev":87,"next":89,"count_bid":0,"bid_history":[],"tokenExpired":1}
