Patricia Tria Olazo, the artist’s wife, notes on the \nartist’s personal chronology in Cid Reyes’ monograph on \nthe artist: “Olazo’s paintings take an opaque quality with \nthe use of mixed media, acrylic, and oil on canvas.”

\nFrom the success—both local honors and international \nexposure—that the Diaphanous Series had brought \nOlazo, it was evident in the Untitled works that Olazo \nwanted to take his artistry up another level, likely to \nprevent creative stagnation and locking himself up within \nthe confines of comfort. Just as the work at hand, Untitled \n#85, exemplifies, Olazo preserves the irregularity of \nforms of the Diaphanous but strips it off with its inherent \nluminescence and delicate ethereality, opting instead for \nsolidity and the use of bolder, varicolored pigments to \nhighlight opacity thus, imbuing them with enigmatic flair. \nSwathes of colors seemingly engage in jarring dialogue \nwith form, veering from the harmonious dancing of the \ntwo elements and enhanced by the airy and almost \nmystical quality of light in the Diaphanous.

\nReyes writes in the same book: “Clearly the Untitled\nworks, by their sheer appellation, constituted Olazo’s \nexperimental stage.”

\nIt can also be said that Olazo’s Untitled works \nforeshadow a transition to another acclaimed series—\nthe Permutation Series. As the untitled works were born \nfrom the withdrawal of significant elements, so was the \nPermutation, retaining only the most fundamental—lines \nand, thus, leaving hollowed spaces.
