Nepomuceno is considered one of the best sculptors of the country and ranks among the likes of Isabelo Tampinco and Guillermo Tolentino. In fact, his work was much admired by the former and the two, despite Nepomuceno being thirty-one years younger, formed a business partnership in 1914 and opened a store on Calle Evangelista in Quiapo with a sign that read ‘Taller de Modelado y Vaciado de Nepomuceno y Tampinco’. The workshop specialized in making sculptures modeled, or modelado, from clay or plaster of Paris, the latter better known locally as escayola. Vaciado, on the other hand, meant ‘casting’, a process undertaken if they wanted copies of the modeled works. When business became prosperous during the construction boom of the second decade, they later opened a foundry shop on Arlegui Street, beside Tampinco’s house to supply the demand for sculptures in cast cement. The partnership was short-lived and lasted only until 1922, when Vidal Tampinco started working with his father.\nAlthough the partnership did not include carving, the two were forced to collaborate on making wooden sculptures, when they undertook the decoration of the new Executive Building in Malacanang that was constructed in 1920 under the administration of Gov. General Francis Burton Harrison. Aside from the cast cement ornaments of the building, the beautiful carved coffered ceilings, door transoms and friezes in the main rooms were all done by them.\nMang Cianoy, as he was fondly called by his clients, was famous for his tipos del pais, small wooden sculptures, usually just a little over a foot high, of genre scenes carved from soft baticuling or the harder narra wood. Some of these were left unprimed, while others were realistically painted in polychrome.\nNepomuceno also carved busts and relief sculptures, the latter usually done on narra panels. This particular bust, executed in plaster of Paris or escayola and entitled ‘La Abuela con Nina’ or ‘The Grandmother with an Infant’, was completed on July 1, 1924. It is said that the sculpture was done after the death of the woman’s daughter, the mother of the infant and shows the grieving grandmother cradling her grandchild in her arms. The face of the elderly, toothless woman is very realistically modeled, with all her wrinkles visible. Her grief is very obviously depicted, and the poignant way she holds the child seems to ask the viewer, “What will happen to this child now?”\n-Martin I.
