He received the Republic Cultural Heritage Award in 1963. He also received the Patnubay ng Sining at Kalinangan Award from the City of Manila in 1970. He was proclaimed National Artist in Painting in 1982.\nManansala was born in Macabebe, Pampanga. At 15, he studied under the turn-of-the-century painter Ramon Peralta while doing signboards for a painting shop. He entered the University of the Philippines School of Fine Arts in 1926 and graduated in 1930. \nHe earned a living as illustrator for the Philippines Herald and Liwayway and layout artist for Fotonews and the Saturday Evening News Magazine during the 1930s. \nIn 1949, Manansala received a six-month grant by UNESCO to study at the École des Beaux-Arts in Banff and Montreal, Canada. In 1950, he received a nine-month scholarship to study at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris by the French government. He undertook further studies and training at the Ecole de Beaux Arts in Montreal, Canada, in the USA, and in France where he had a brief stint under Fernand Leger. \nManansala's canvases were described as masterpieces that brought the cultures of the barrio and the city together. His ‘Madonna of the Slums’ is a portrayal of a mother and child from the countryside who became urban shanty residents once in the city. Manansala combined the elements of provincial folk culture with the issues of the city. \nManansala developed transparent cubism, where the \"delicate tones, shapes, and patterns of figure and environment are masterfully superimposed\" so that the elements appear translucent. \nVicente Manansala, a National Artist of the Philippines in Visual Arts, was a direct influence on his fellow Filipino neo-realists: Malang, Angelito Antonio, Norma Belleza, Hugo Yonzon and Manuel Baldemor. \nAside from major local private collections and museums his works are in international collections such as the Honolulu Museum of Art, the Lopez Memorial Museum (Manila), the Philippine Center (New York City), and the Singapore Art Museum.","lot_group":"PAINTING","lot_details_html":"
Vicente Manansala (1910-1981)
Pila sa Bigas
signed and dated 1979 (lower left)
oil on canvas
36” x 48” (91 cm x 122 cm)
","alias":null,"hp":80000,"bp":0.168,"isWithdrawn":0,"accounting_hp":80000,"userBid":5926,"isPaid":0,"userId":22,"lot_status":"SOLD","isDone":1,"bid_history_id":null,"reserve_price":null,"hammer_price":93440,"fav":0},"image":[{"id":36800,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/52/80/lot/145.jpg","isFeatured":1}]},"increment":[70000,80000,90000,100000,110000,120000,130000,140000,150000,160000,170000,180000,190000,200000,220000,240000,260000,280000,300000,320000,340000,360000,380000,400000,450000,500000,550000,600000,650000,700000,750000,800000,900000,1000000,1100000,1200000,1300000,1400000,1500000,1600000,1700000,1800000,1900000,2000000,2200000,2400000,2600000,2800000,3000000,3200000,3400000,3600000,3800000,4000000,4200000,4400000,4600000,4800000,5000000,5500000,6000000,6500000,7000000,7500000,8000000,8500000,9000000,9500000,10000000,11000000,12000000,13000000,14000000,15000000,16000000,17000000,18000000,19000000,20000000],"prev":144,"next":0,"count_bid":0,"bid_history":[],"tokenExpired":1}
