The subtle and dramatic shifts of hue and value, like waves, are integral to the gossamer diaphanous field. Moreover, the shape of the field acknowledges the boundaries of the canvas and thus maintaining the pictorial unity of a traditional easel painting.\nThe painting synthesizes all the Abstract qualities that Olazo’s unique art is known for.\nOlazo began his career as an artist at a critical juncture, when the foundations of a modernist tradition were just laid. Olazo first came to the fore of as a printmaker who made striking innovations by developing his Diaphanous series, a unique body of abstract paintings that “are veritable visions of light. They have been likened to dragonfly wings, sheets of gossamer veil or gauze, and even a symphony.”\nRomulo Olazo has remained constant to an abstract idiom he has made his own in his graphic works on canvas, the perennial Diaphanous series. Created from multiple layers of delicate “screens”, Olazo’s diaphanous compositions are a demonstration of the possibilities of light over matter.","lot_group":"PAINTING","lot_details_html":"
Romulo Olazo (1934-2015)
Diaphanous 409
signed and dated 1983 (lower right)
oil on canvas
34” x 46” (86 cm x 117 cm)
","alias":null,"hp":4200000,"bp":0.168,"isWithdrawn":0,"accounting_hp":4200000,"userBid":5926,"isPaid":0,"userId":22,"lot_status":"SOLD","isDone":1,"bid_history_id":null,"reserve_price":null,"hammer_price":4905600,"fav":0},"image":[{"id":37276,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/54/82/lot/127.jpg","isFeatured":1}]},"increment":[2200000,2400000,2600000,2800000,3000000,3200000,3400000,3600000,3800000,4000000,4200000,4400000,4600000,4800000,5000000,5500000,6000000,6500000,7000000,7500000,8000000,8500000,9000000,9500000,10000000,11000000,12000000,13000000,14000000,15000000,16000000,17000000,18000000,19000000,20000000],"prev":126,"next":128,"count_bid":0,"bid_history":[],"tokenExpired":1}
