Pole in hand, the man is twisting, reaching, bending, and grasping. Botong drew most of his subjects from the life of Angono, his lakeshore town, and he gave to genre painting a rich, particularity of the culture of fishermen and farmers, or just plain folk.\nThe artist prefers an expressively linear articulation of the torso and limbs to express the toil of work. With the rendering of the anatomy in the torsos and muscles of the gaunt worker, one will agree with Alice Guillermo who wrote: “Francisco succeeded in forming a visual language that was both Filipino and Southeast Asian”.\nThe camote digger is the archetype of toil and patience, a provincial everyman clad only in shorts against an undetailed background The sketch may stir an emotional reaction from the viewer, who might think of hunger and poverty as suggested by the bent and intent figure digging for a meal. The digger is almost skeletal, showing protruding clavicle below the neck area. But it should be remembered that Botong’s people are neither sweetly romantic nor tragically victimized: he would have said they are just themselves — people like everyone else.\nCarlos “Botong” Francisco was the bridge between the Amorsolo tradition on one hand and the Edades tradition in another in Philippine painting.\nIt has been written that Botong himself thought that both the “conservatives” and “modernists” of his time falsified reality: the Amorsolo-led conservatives when they touched up their country folk with a false romanticism and the Edades-led modernists when they mired their proletariat in the abyss of despair, squalor and helplessness. His own subjects he approached with gentle irony and respectful sympathy.","lot_group":"PAINTING","lot_details_html":"
Carlos ‘‘Botong’’ Francisco (1912-1969)
Study for Camote Diggers
signed and dated 1966 (lower right)
pencil on paper
14” x 16 1/2” (36 cm x 42 cm)
","alias":null,"hp":260000,"bp":0.168,"isWithdrawn":0,"accounting_hp":260000,"userBid":5926,"isPaid":0,"userId":22,"lot_status":"SOLD","isDone":1,"bid_history_id":null,"reserve_price":null,"hammer_price":303680,"fav":0},"image":[{"id":37197,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/54/82/lot/74.jpg","isFeatured":1}]},"increment":[220000,240000,260000,280000,300000,320000,340000,360000,380000,400000,450000,500000,550000,600000,650000,700000,750000,800000,900000,1000000,1100000,1200000,1300000,1400000,1500000,1600000,1700000,1800000,1900000,2000000,2200000,2400000,2600000,2800000,3000000,3200000,3400000,3600000,3800000,4000000,4200000,4400000,4600000,4800000,5000000,5500000,6000000,6500000,7000000,7500000,8000000,8500000,9000000,9500000,10000000,11000000,12000000,13000000,14000000,15000000,16000000,17000000,18000000,19000000,20000000],"prev":73,"next":75,"count_bid":0,"bid_history":[],"tokenExpired":1}
