The first tentative evidence of this was found in small curiosity shops in Paris and soon spread like wildfire through the rest of the Continent. \nArtists such as Van Gogh, Gauguin, Whistler, Degas, Manet and Monet (to name a very few) succumbed to the charm of the Ukiyo-e woodblock prints. The japoneque would eventually influence the art of many of the Impressionists — and not far behind was its effect on music (light opera such as “The Mikado”), architecture (Frank Lloyd Wright), jewelry (Tiffany) and fashion (handpainted kimonos in silk and velvet for the 19th-century beauties), which washed over the West for the rest of the Gilded Age and well into the start of the 20th century.\nNot surprisingly, the ilustrados beginning with Rizal were equally enamoured. Jose Rizal himself had his own sketchbook of his Japanese stay, dated 1888, that detailed his travels in Tokyo and a handful of other Japanese cities. In Rizal’s case, he did in fact fall in love literally, with a lass called O-sei San.\nIt is recorded that Juan Luna, narrowly escaped a long-winded, second imprisonment in Manila after the Katipunan-led revolution in 1896. (He was first jailed in Paris for the shooting of his wife and mother-in-law in 1892 but was subsequently released with just a slap on the wrist, thanks to his international reputation and kingly connections.)\nHis brother Antonio Luna was not as lucky — and was not released as quickly from Fort Santiago where he was actually tortured for suspected complicity in the August uprising.\nWe can presume that this sketchbook and diary dates before the outbreak of the Philippine Revolution because after it, Juan Luna would have been in a hurry to return to Spain to press for his brother’s freedom. (Antonio, in fact, was released from his Manila captors but would spend the rest of his sentence in a Spanish jail.)\nIt was not uncommon for the well-heeled Filipino to travel to Japan to take in its sights, then quite exotic, even for Filipinos. (There were Japanese migrant workers, carpenters and gardeners, who worked in Manila workshops and homes.) But could Juan Luna’s trip to Japan have a greater purpose than a tourist’s adventures?\nTokyo had also become known as the home of the exile Sun Yat-Sen who would become a friend of Mariano Ponce in 1898. Sun Yat-Sen reportedly introduced Ponce to a Filipino-Japanese who arranged to have arms sent to the Filipino revolutionary forces. \nSun Yat-Sen, however, was in exile in Japan since 1895 after a failed uprising in China. Mariano Ponce was a diplomat, representing the First Philippine Republic — and so was Juan Luna, who actually tried to block the Treaty of Paris peace talks between the United States and Spain.\nThe sketchbook and diary, dated 1896, comes from that tumultuous year in the national life of the Philippines. In it, Luna sketches and paints Japanese scenes — homes, people, even describing in detail the various tableware. In it, it is also seen that he is teaching himself how to write in Japanese — beginning with basic Chinese characters that are also used in Japan as well as calligraphy of the numbers 1 to 10. He also wrote Japanese characters and their phonetic equivalents in the Western alphabet.\nThe sketchbook and diary are an engrossing look not only in the mind of Juan Luna and what interested him — he had an engineer’s scientific mind in his dissection of even the most ordinary kitchen equipment — but also of that time in our nation’s first days leading to its struggle for independence.\n-Lisa Guerrero Nakpi","lot_group":"BOOKS","lot_details_html":"
Juan Luna (1857-1899)
Sketchbook and Diary
1896
44 pages
5” x 9” (13 cm x 23 cm)
","alias":null,"hp":1800000,"bp":0.168,"isWithdrawn":0,"accounting_hp":1800000,"userBid":5926,"isPaid":0,"userId":22,"lot_status":"SOLD","isDone":1,"bid_history_id":null,"reserve_price":null,"hammer_price":2102400,"fav":0},"image":[{"id":37198,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/54/82/lot/75k.jpg","isFeatured":0},{"id":37196,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/54/82/lot/75h.jpg","isFeatured":0},{"id":37194,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/54/82/lot/75j.jpg","isFeatured":0},{"id":37193,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/54/82/lot/75g.jpg","isFeatured":0},{"id":37192,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/54/82/lot/75i.jpg","isFeatured":0},{"id":37191,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/54/82/lot/75d.jpg","isFeatured":0},{"id":37190,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/54/82/lot/75b.jpg","isFeatured":0},{"id":37189,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/54/82/lot/75f.jpg","isFeatured":0},{"id":37188,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/54/82/lot/75c.jpg","isFeatured":0},{"id":37187,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/54/82/lot/75e.jpg","isFeatured":0},{"id":37185,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/54/82/lot/75a.jpg","isFeatured":0}]},"increment":[900000,1000000,1100000,1200000,1300000,1400000,1500000,1600000,1700000,1800000,1900000,2000000,2200000,2400000,2600000,2800000,3000000,3200000,3400000,3600000,3800000,4000000,4200000,4400000,4600000,4800000,5000000,5500000,6000000,6500000,7000000,7500000,8000000,8500000,9000000,9500000,10000000,11000000,12000000,13000000,14000000,15000000,16000000,17000000,18000000,19000000,20000000],"prev":74,"next":76,"count_bid":0,"bid_history":[],"tokenExpired":1}
