In this work, the table is approached and appreciated as surface, structure, and an open form that has been affixed with hundreds of rulers.  These rulers made of wood are familiar  to us as emblems of childhood — the first instrument we used in measuring things and  a weapon wielded by our teachers as threat for corporal punishment.  The material,  of course, echoes that of the table, but the connection of the ruler may be more semantic and metaphorical to the one who has power over the table, usually the father who sits  by the “kabisera” as the head — or the ruler — of the family.  To be by a table  is to be a part of the conversation, such as in the idiomatic expression, “a seat on the table.”  To “bring something to the table” is to offer something worthwhile and important.
