This was because the tops were imported, usually from China. The diameter of the top, the molding around the edge, the number of grooves around the rim and the elaborate carving on the base added to the status of the owner. The bigger and more elaborate, the higher the status. This particular piece with a solid marble top and channels carved around the rim is even rarer. Since the top was heavy, the table needed a sturdy base like the thick narra baluster leg of this table. Its shaft, carved with an acanthus leaves, rests on a drum that terminates at the bottom in an upturned knob. The three legs of the table are in the form of an S-shaped foliate scroll attached to the cylindrical base of the pedestal. Each leg, somewhat massive in form, is beautifully carved with a foliate scroll at the sides with a flower and buds ornamenting the shoulders. The lower part of the leg is sculpted in the form of a graceful scroll. The solid marble top of the table rests on a circular narra skirt with a half-round molding at the bottom. The edge of the marble top is carved with a pair of moldings, while the top is bordered by several channels. -Martin I.
