The boatman is Elias, the beacon of political change in the novel Noli Me Tangere by National Hero Jose Rizal. Here, he is seen rowing on the Pasig River, teeming with water hyacinths in the foreground, as he hides Crisostomo Ibarra, the protagonist of the novel, who lies motionless on the boat, the half of his face peeking through layers of thatch. They are about to make a dramatic escape from the authorities. Juxtaposing the calm rowing of Elias as well as the placidity of the Pasig River with the possibility of capture, Amorsolo imbued the scene with narrative suspense, redolent with the atmospheric glow suffused with fading light. In the distance are Spanish ships which Elias eyes guardedly.
