He showed 31 works, in both watercolor (said to be his forte at the time) and oil, under the aegis of Vicente Manansala. At the time, the newspapers reported, he was a 3rd year student at the University of Santo Tomas and Manansala was both teacher and mentor. Interestingly, a work called “Sunday Morning” on oil and wood, and far more representational than this piece at hand, was also featured. His first recognition at the Art Association of the Philippines competition would be in 1961, after which he would receive prizes for a watercolor entitled “Fish” in 1963; followed by another one, this time for oil, for a work called “Geometric Still Life Fish”, for the competition later in the year of 1963, and for a work eerily the same title as Manansala’s oil in this exhibition, “Still Life in Red.” By 1957, however, he would be in the fold of Philippine Art Gallery and would be exhibiting in its vaunted rooms regularly. He would also illustrate Lyd Arguilla’s poetry that would appear in the press. His work in this period continued to resonate with Manansala’s themes, colors, and cubistic fragmentations. “Sunday Morning” is a chalk-white basilica surrounded by crowds of the faithful, reduced to triangular forms — reminiscent of Luz’s prize-winning “Procession” in 1955. A bright sun shines above, the same color as the holy light that colors the church windows. Blue, the color of celestial truth and love, fills the sky and the plaza around the church. -Lisa Guerrero Nakpil","lot_group":"PAINTING","lot_details_html":"
Ang Kiukok (1931-2005)
Sunday Morning
signed and dated 1957 (upper left)
oil on wood
17 1/2” x 29 1/2” (44 cm x 75 cm)
","alias":null,"hp":4200000,"bp":0.168,"isWithdrawn":0,"accounting_hp":4200000,"userBid":5926,"isPaid":0,"userId":22,"lot_status":"SOLD","isDone":1,"bid_history_id":null,"reserve_price":null,"hammer_price":4905600,"fav":0},"image":[{"id":37383,"img_url":"https://leongallery.sgp1.digitaloceanspaces.com/v2/auction/55/83/lot/113.jpg","isFeatured":1}]},"increment":[2200000,2400000,2600000,2800000,3000000,3200000,3400000,3600000,3800000,4000000,4200000,4400000,4600000,4800000,5000000,5500000,6000000,6500000,7000000,7500000,8000000,8500000,9000000,9500000,10000000,11000000,12000000,13000000,14000000,15000000,16000000,17000000,18000000,19000000,20000000],"prev":112,"next":114,"count_bid":0,"bid_history":[],"tokenExpired":1}
