Sra. de la Soledad de Porta Vaga, is considered the Patroness of Cavite Province. She is the most venerated Marian image in Cavite, ever since her icon was found by the Vaga Gate of the Fort of Cavite in 1692. Enshrined in the Ermita de San Roque, it was used to bless departing trade galleons plying the route between Cavite and Acapulco in Mexico, earning her the title ‘Patroness of the Galleons’. Depictions of the Nuestra Senora de la Porta Vaga are usually encased in a box frame containing an appliqued image of the Virgin behind glass. The Blessed Virgin Mary, always depicted in a kneeling position with her hands clasped in anguish, has her robes wrapped around her body to form a pear-shaped silhouette. Rarely does one find examples of the Porta Vaga with face and hands carved out of ivory and the frame overlaid with silver, as is this particular piece. This image of Our Lady is shown resting on a base resembling a banner which is inscribed in golden letters with ‘Nstra. Sra. de Soledad’. She is garbed in a white satin tunic and a black velvet mantle that has faded to a dull brown. The vestments are embroidered with meandering flowers and leaves in gold thread that have tarnished with time. Around her face is a silver-gilt rostrillo (the Spanish name for a veil or headdress that frames the face) which is used locally to describe the rays around the face of a santo. The rostrillo is embellished with eleven stars set with crystal with a 12th star set above the Virgin’s forehead. A flaming silver heart is appliqued to the breast of the Virgin. The image appears to be atop a simulated andas or palanquin of embossed & chased silver flanked by Solomonic columns supporting blue draperies with golden fringes tied by golden cords. A pair of chased silver candlesticks with tapers flanks the Virgin, while a galleon is appliqued just off her right shoulder. The last alludes to her title of ‘Patroness of the Galleons’, Cavite being the port of departure and entry of the Manila-Acapulco galleons. The background of the piece consists of a wooden panel painted with a diaper pattern in golden dots and dashes with quatrefoils at each intersection. -Martin I.
